Too Busy? 4 Ways to Make Time in Your Day for God
Hey there, friends! Today I have another message that hits close to home... lately my life has gotten BUSY. I am in a season (here we go again...) where it feels that every minute of every day is absolutely booked! I fall into bed exhausted at night, only to hear my alarm in the morning go off, leaving me to weigh my options: quiet time with the Lord, or an extra half an hour of sleep? Friends, as ashamed as I am to admit it, this week has been a struggle. In a time when I truly needed God, sleep wormed its way into first place.
I told myself I needed the extra sleep. Truth be told, I did. I convinced myself to change my schedule - quiet time with the Lord might work better in this time of my life. Day after day passed... evenings rolled around, nights came and went. Nights filled with the comfort of a warm blanket and the sound of Netflix shows streaming through the speakers of my phone.
Yes, you‘ve guessed it. As guilty as I felt, I reasoned that I needed the rest. Yet when it comes down to it, how restful is it to watch a high-speed car chase? Anyways, I’m still working to become more mindful and balance my day to day life and never-ending to-do lists, but incorporating these steps into my day have helped me to grow my relationship with God even when I’m busy. I hope you give these a try... enjoy!
1. Read Scripture… but don’t overthink it!
When I study my Bible, I love to make it an artsy activity. I pull out all of my highlighters and my markers, and let’s be honest: stickers are always welcome. Yet I spend so much time trying to make my Bible pretty and aesthetic, when honestly, I came here for God.
My advice, and something that I‘ve really been working on lately, is to read Scripture without all of the annotations. It really helps to focus on God’s truth without overthinking it - don’t worry about your colors or your fun doodles when you’re in a rush. I’m not saying to speed-read through it… take the time and soak it in, but don’t get caught up in the aesthetic color scheme and drawings and calligraphy. You don’t have to make it an event - make it manageable.
2. Download the YouVersion Bible app
The Youversion Bible app is a great resource for on-the-go worship. Whether reading, listening to an audio clip, or downloading a Bible plan, it’s a great way to focus on your time with God amid all the rush. If I’m waiting in line, or sitting on a bus or in a doctor’s office, I can easily pull out my phone and read through God’s word. It’s quick, easy and convenient.
Something important to note that I briefly mentioned above: Bible plans. The Youversion app offers the amazing resource of Bible plans, which are basically free daily online devotionals based on your needs. A wide variety of mental health topics are included, such as love, anxiety, healing, anger, hope, depression, etc., with amazing advice from speakers such as Sadie Robertson and Joyce Meyer. Definitely something to check out and add to the daily!
3. Listen to a podcast/church online
Another great way to make time for God when life gets busy is to listen to a Christian podcast, or a church recording on Youtube. You can find your favorite pastors online and listen to their sermons, or, depending on where you live, maybe your own home church! I personally love Chris Estrada’s sermons, and he’s quick and easy to find on Youtube. If I’m driving somewhere far from my house, I can use the aux to connect him through my car, and bam! Jesus.
As I mentioned above, you can also find some great Christian podcasts to listen to. The Christian women community is wonderful, especially in the online world. Some great podcasts to listen to include:
4. Listen to worship music on-the-go
Finally, the last tip that I have on how to make time for God in your day is listening to worship music. That’s right - jam out sesh! Whether driving on your way to work or taking a shower and getting ready for the night, worship music is the way to go. Some of my favorite worship bands include Maverick City Music and Hillsong Worship. Check them out, make your playlists, and you’re set!
I pray that these tips truly help you make time for God during your busy week. Integrating these habits into your daily routine are simple ways to get closer in your relationship with God, and though they seem small, they will truly make a lifetime of a difference.
